The paper reports a novel fast ion beam translational energy spectroscopy technique as applied for the determination of the nascent rovibrational population of O2(+) ions produced in the reaction between O(+)(4S) with CO2. The technique uses a position- and time-sensitive detector to measure the spectrum of the center-of-mass kinetic energies released to the O-atom fragments following dissociative ion charge transfer of O2(+) with Cs. Least-sqaures fits to the spectra reveal the rovibrational distribution in the initial O2(+) ions, showed a monotonically decreasing population of vibrational levels, with v = 0 having the highest population. The novel fast ion beam technique is demonstrated to be a versatile and powerful method for investigating the energy disposal in ion-molecule reactions.
