Scientific paper
The current knowledge of noctilucent clouds (NLCs) and views concerning their origin, formation, development, and dissipation are summarized. The geometry of twilight scattering, color and brightness, NLC structure, morphological forms, height, particle size and number density, and the relationship between NLCs and polar mesospheric clouds are considered.
