The 10Be, geochemistry and sedimentology in the two North Pacific cores have been investigated. A sharp drop in 10Be concentration has been found in both cores at around 3 m.y. B.P. This corresponds to sharp changes in the transition metal and rare earth element concentrations. The 10Be discontinuity can be interpreted as a hiatus in sediment accumulation of about 5 m.y. Alternatively, it may be due to changes in the scavenging efficiency of 10Be as a function of time related to at present unknown ocean bottom processes.
