The large-scale heliosphere is disturbed on multiple time scales, these ranging from the changing solar cycle to shorter time scales associated with interplanetary shock waves. The global structure cannot therefore be regarded as unchanging and static and models describing the structure of the heliosphere, even at the largest global scales, must eventually include temporal effects. By means of 2D time-dependent multi-fluid simulations, which include the effects of interstellar neutrals, pickup ions, and plasma, we consider the large-scale structure of the heliosphere in the presence of (i) a solar wind whose ram pressure varies with solar cycle, (ii) propagating global merged interaction regions (GMIRs), and (iii) coronal mass ejection driven shock waves of finite latitudinal and longitudinal extent. Both analytic calculations and numerical simulations addressing the stability of the heliopause in the presence of the hydrogen wall will also be presented.
