The possibility of starting a substorm by a magnetoacoustic wave generated in the plasma layer surrounded by sections of the magnetotail, due to sudden pressure change in the solar wind, was investigated using a magnetospheric tail model with a plasma layer and tail sections. An expression is derived for the relation between the amplitude of oscillations on the boundary of the plasma layer and the amplitude of external disturbance (i.e., a sudden impulse of solar wind pressure). It is suggested that strong boundary oscillations may initiate a substorm explosion phase.
