A model has been developed recently for large-scale motions of open magnetic flux in the solar corona. The model can account for the near constancy of the magnitude of open magnetic flux, the differences between fast and slow solar wind, and aspects of the dynamics of the solar corona. The principal mechanism for transport of open magnetic flux in the corona is diffusion resulting from the reconnection of open field lines with closed magnetic loops. It is pointed out that this process will result in a Poynting flux into the corona, which in turn can be responsible for the acceleration of the solar wind. There is thus a coupling between the diffusive motions in the corona and the acceleration of the solar wind, which permits tests of the model and predictions for where and how the solar wind is accelerated.
