A latitudinal network of GPS receivers, located near the west coast of South America, has been used to study several important issues related to the initiation of scintillations at low latitudes. This GPS network, although incomplete in its coverage until 2000, has been able to show that the TEC latitudinal profiles present significantly different characteristics depending on the scintillation activity. The TEC distributions obtained in 1998 and 1999, using data from 6 GPS receivers, have shown that the peak-to-valley ratio is large (> 3), and changes quite rapidly near sunset for days when scintillations occur at Ancon or when plumes develop at Jicamarca. The presence of TEC depletions correlates well with the display of the radar plumes and the appearance of scintillations. However, in few cases we observe a pattern of scintillations containing a high power law spectra (> 3) and no TEC depletions and no radar plumes. In February 2000, a new receiver was placed in Iquitos (73.2 W, 3.8 S) and in January 2001 one more was installed in Cuzco (72.0 W, 13.6 S). We also plan to deploy a new receiver in Pucallpa (74.8 W, 8.5 S) during April 2001. Here, we will present data from the new stations in an effort to fully characterize the northern anomaly, and relate the strength of both anomalies to the onset of scintillations. We will discuss the merits of this network of GPS receivers in achieving a forecasting capability of the occurrence of scintillations at low latitudes.
