Estimates of Hemispheric Power Input from auroral particle precipitation are routinely made from the NOAA/POES Total Electron Detector observations during transits over the Polar Regions. Based upon this estimate, a Hemispheric Power Index (HPI) is assigned and the corresponding statistical pattern of auroral energy input often used to estimate the global pattern of auroral disturbance. While the statistical pattern is fixed, there is considerable variability in the observations. This paper describes the distribution of HPI with respect to the corresponding Kp magnetic activity index (and vice versa.) Also described are the variability of individual energy flux observations at given magnetic locations and in the equatorward boundary of auroral particle precipitation with respect to those averaged values in the statistical pattern. Several years of NOAA-12 observations are used for the study. These results may be used to judge the uncertainties likely to arise from using statistical patterns, such as the NOAA auroral particle energy input patterns, as input to models.
