We present results of an ion chemistry model for the D- and E-region. The model input comprises both non-auroral and auroral ionization sources. Applying recent measurements and model results of H2O, NO, and O, the sensitivity of the ion chemistry to the detailed distribution of neutral species is investigated. Special emphasis is paid to small scale neutral stratifications which are reflected in resulting ionospheric structures. Also, the feedback of the ion chemistry on the neutral species is discussed. We focus this study on the cold summer mesopause region where interactions between neutral and charged processes are intimately involved in phenomena like noctilucent clouds (NLC) and polar summer mesospheric echoes (PMSE). New results are presented in particular on relationships between ion chemistry and the existence of charged particles.
