A theoretical framework is developed for the investigation of the motion of the caustic network produced by microlenses. Expressions are obtained for the velocity of the caustics as well as for the differential area swept out by the caustics, which corresponds to the frequency of high amplification events. The theory is applied to the two point mass lens and to the bulk motion of a star field.
