We present preliminary results of a NIR survey of NGC 6822 carried during the last four observing seasons. The goal of our variable star program is to identify and characterize the bright red variables. In one of the two observed fields we have identified 30 Miras and 24 irregular variables. Cross identification of the Miras with the known Carbon stars reveals the C-rich AGB are among the oldest Miras.
