An astronomy laboratory exercise is discussed in the context of its use by an introductory class of liberal arts undergraduates. Information concerning the orbit of Mercury is obtained with the emphasis on deriving results by methods readily visualized by such students and from observations they understand. The experiment is believed suitable also for high school classes and, by the described additions, can be adapted for introductory classes more conversant with mathematics and science.
