The Martian magnetosphere is immersed in the neutral corona of the planet. This leads to the direct interaction of the solar wind with the atmosphere. The IMF (interplanetary magnetic field) strongly controls the mass-loading in the upstream region providing a distinct asymmetry. Inside the bow shock, the mass-loading process becomes more effective, leading to the formation of a new plasma boundary (mass-loading boundary-MLB).
