Recent observations of quiet sun surface oscillations are reviewed, and their strength in diagnosing the solar interior are evaluated. The regions of the solar body where acoustic and gravity waves may be expected are illustrated, and a diagnostic diagram of five-minute oscillations is given. High quality (k, omega) power spectra offer a good understanding of the convection zone; long and continuous surveys of oscillations of the integrated sun, however, will provide a greater knowledge of the inner solar body.
