Results of visual observations of Saturn, Mars, and outer planets carried out by amateur astronomers using the 1-meter telescope of the Pic du Midi Observatory in southern France are summarized. The aim of the project was to determine what might have been discovered on the planets by eye if photography had not been widely used since the turn of the century. The visually observable features of the planets are identified. It is noted that the eye-brain system is capable of recording fine and low-contrast planetary features much better than film does.
