Scientific paper

The recent discovery of an object bound to the sun by gravity but situated beyond the orbit of Pluto is discussed. The discovery of this object, designated 1992 QB1, may confirm the existence of the Kuiper belt, envisioned to be a disk of far-flung comets left over from the origin of the solar system. The implications of the new discovery for the future search for distant comets beyond Pluto are examined.
