Possible scenarios by which massive chunks of strange quark matter (SQMs) would be processed into lighter ones are considered. Spallation processes with light particles in the interstellar medium are found not to result in a sufficient production probability for SQMs for their abundance to be consistent with recent cosmic ray observations. However, it is found that spallation from high energy SQMs by heavy nuclei in high density stellar nebulae may be capable of converting all heavy SQMs into light ones.
