Scientific paper

The history of comet studies is reviewed, and the current understanding of the nature of comets is examined, with attention given to comets and the solar system, comet orbits, comets from the physical point of view, comet tails, and unsolved problems of comet physics. A photograph of Halley's comet taken in 1910 is presented, along with computer-synthesized color isophotes obtained on the basis of this photograph. Planned missions (Soviet, Japanese, and European) to Halley's comet are described.
