The effect of unsteady electric fields on the distribution of cold plasma in the ionosphere and protonosphere is studied on the basis of an ionosphere-protonosphere model that takes into account convection and the disconnection of geomagnetic field lines in the polar cap. It is shown that the basic effects of unsteady convection are the stratification of the trough in the evening sector, the appearance of a plasma tail in the equatorial plane of the magnetosphere, and the appearance of particle-density peaks beyond the plasmapause and the light-ion trough.
