It is suggested that the universe may have been at one time in a self-gravitating, four-spacial dimensional [4 space + 1 time] configuration. Specifically, an ultra-degenerate, non-relativistic system of particles, gravitationally interacting via the 1/rp2 potential in four spacial dimensions has a critical mass which can assume the value of the characteristic mass of our universe.
