It is shown that optically thin free-free emission of hot thermal plasmas is not necessarily the correct physical model for the exponential spectra of gamma ray bursts. If the sources are neutron stars with magnetic fields of at least one quadrillion Gauss, then the synchrotron emissivity of hot thermal electrons would exceed their free-free emissivity for any electron density consistent with observations. The data are demonstrated to be fitted well by optically thin thermal synchroton spectra of midly relativistic electrons. Upper limits are noted to be possible for the luminosity and distance due to an absence of observable low-energy turnover because of synchrontron self absorption. Confirmation of a synchrotron mechanism is suggested to be possible by detection of the first harmonics at low energies.
