Magnetospheric flows may be described in terms of either currents and electric fields or magnetic flux tubes and convection velocities. Both formulations are presently developed to include ionospheric effects, tail effects and plasma pressure effects, in conjunction with a narrow channel approximation whose consequences and predictions, when applied to the Feldstein ovals, are explored. Attention is given to the types of time-dependent flows that could be solved by means of the narrow channel approximation. Since the plasma sheet is believed to correspond to diffuse auroras, the Feldstein ovals, which are based on discrete auroras, may not be ideal for this study. Nevertheless, they are the only set of ovals which are reasonably complete at the present time.
