We analyze the waveguide properties of the ionospheric F-layer in the Alfven wave frequency region, in order to outline methods for global ionospheric diagnostics. The eigenmode spectrum of the waves that are trapped in the ionospheric waveguide is obtained by means of a waveguide model that takes the ionization profile asymmetry into account. We also show that this asymmetry influences the localization of Alfven waves with frequencies 1-5 Hz.
