Magnetic properties as well as microscopic and crystallographic features of four selected igneous rocks were investigated in detail in an attempt to give reliable data of the intensity of the earth's magnetic field in the Precambrian period. Evaluation of the experimental results leads to the following conclusions: (1) The stepwise heating method can be a very reliable technique for the intensity determination if some additional tests reveal the limit of its feasibility. (2) Various types of igneous rocks are suitable to determine the intensity of the Precambrian field if the stepwise heating method is principally used. (3) Intensity of the geomagnetic field thus determined for the period between 1150 and 2485 million years seems to be nearly equal to that at present. Now at Ocean Research Institute, University of Tokyo.
