Electrochemical fuel cells which can efficiently provide electrical energy from chemical energy are considered. The possible use of carbon monoxide and oxygen obtained from the separation of the carbon dioxide in the Martian atmosphere to make electricity to power planetary rover vehicles on planet Mars is discussed. Although fuel cells are heavier than internal combustion engines of the same power output, they are potentially more reliable and efficient in the consumption of propellant. Depending on the mission model chosen for a planetary rover vehicle, fuel cells using the carbon monoxide and oxygen reaction offer a promising alternative to vehicle designers.
