The 1996 Russian mission to mars is expected to be delayed until 1998. Funding limits were the main reason for this delay. More energy will be required to reach Mars in 1998 than in 1996 due to the change in planetary alignment. This will require the removal of some mass when the Proton launch vehicle is used. Meanwhile the Mars 1994 mission preparations are still underway, but the schedule is tight.
