Hst Proposal Id #5149 Hot Stars Massive Stars

Scientific paper

We propose to take high resolution Planetary Camera images of 4 Luminous Blue Variables in our Galaxy and in the LMC with the objective of constraining the properties of their ejecta, already discovered by ground-based techniques. The images will be taken in the nebular lines Halpha, [NII], and [SII] to place firm upper limits on the surface brightness of the nebulae, and hence on their densities and masses. The excellent spatial resolution offered by WFPC2 will allow us to resolve the observed features, and to shed light on their nature and origin. We will be able to to improve our understanding of the outburst mechanism in LBVs.
