When energetic cosmic rays interact with gas in interstellar space or near the sources in which they are accelerated, photons and neutrinos are among the stable end products of the collisions. In the energy range above 100 TeV there is little understanding at present of how cosmic particles are accelerated - though there are many ideas. The field awaits clarification from experiments that look for signals of very energetic photons and neutrinos from sites of cosmic ray origin and acceleration.
