We propose a new radiation energy, which is defined as an energy radiation measured close to the source. This energy enables us to rigorously handle the energy emitted not only from an earthquake but also from asperities of an earthquake. Therefore we can discuss a spatial variation of the radiation energy on the fault and compare it with the fracture energy distribution that consumed during the rupture. It should be noted that this new radiation energy includes the energy due to near field deformation. The difference between the traditional radiation energy and this new radiation energy is proven to be equal to the static strain energy change.
