We give a brief description of the first atmospheric neutrinos seen in
the 22.5 kiloton fiducial volume of the Super-Kamiokande ring-imaging
water Cerenkov detector. Considering only sub-GeV (less than 1.33 GeV)
fully contained events, 257 events are found in 36.68 days of livetime.
