We propose to image a 5 square degree area of sky to unprecedented sensitivity (4-sigma detection limit of 1 mJy) in the radio continuum at 20 GHz. Our goal is to determine (i) the surface density of sources at the 1 mJy level and (ii) the 20 GHz detection rate of nearby (z<0.3) galaxies at these faint flux levels. The results of this pilot study will be used to plan a new large continuum survey with CABB at 20 GHz, the AT20G-deep survey. The aim of AT20G-deep is to image at least 500 square degrees of sky to sub-mJy sensitivity at 20 GHz. By combining the AT20G-deep data with large-area optical redshift surveys, we will be able to measure the first accurate radio luminosity functions at 20 GHz, provide new insights into the lifetime, duty cycles and evolution of radio-loud AGN, and investigate a new class of extragalctic radio sources which is not seen in low-frequency surveys.
