Although the uncertainties are great, the rewards from studying the lowest-metallicity systems are also great: they could directly probe the earliest star formation in the universe, and the earliest, fundamental stages of galactic chemical evolution. The lowest observed element abundances are determined by a number of factors. These include stellar yields, environment, element dispersal process, and physical and observational selection effects. I discuss some of the dominant phenomena and interpretations of such data.
