A set of coupled equations describing the modulational instability, including gravity, is derived from the MHD. It is noted that the results obtained here may figure prominently in processes of magnetic field line reconnection caused by nonlinear MHD waves (Sakai et al., 1982), as well as in explanations of the slow motions recently observed in the X-ray pictures during Skylab (Rust and Svestka, 1979). The modulational instability is discussed, and an estimate is made of the growth rate. Attention is also given to the applications of the modulational instability of fast modes to a solar plasma.
