We examine the physical conditions of the Narrow Line Region (NLR) gas in the Seyfert 2 galaxy Markarian 3 using Space Telescope Imaging Spectrometer (STIS) long-slit spectroscopy. Spectra were obtained with the 52x0.1 arcsecond slit in low resolution mode over the full STIS 1200-10000Å wavelength range. The slit was oriented along the major axis of the elongated "S"-shaped NLR at a position angle 71 degrees east of north. A faint partially stellar continuum is observed across the entire STIS wavelength range. We identify 47 emission lines in the spectrum. We measure emission line fluxes for a region +/-0.8 arcseconds (3.06 kpc) from the nucleus. The emission lines show a complex spatial morphology. Along some detector rows we identify two principal kinematic components, while on others only one is resolved. We use emission line diagnostics to infer the extinction values, temperatures, densities, and abundances of the kinematic components and to constrain the spectrum of the ionizing radiation.
