Theoretical models of the long-lived prominent markings on the cloud surfaces of Saturn and Jupiter are reviewed. Laboratory and numerical experiments on sloping or slantwise convection in quasi-steady thermally driven flows in internally heated rapidly rotating low-viscosity fluids are found to predict the anticyclonic eddies, such as the Great Red Spot and White Ovals of Jupiter, while the cyclonic 'barges' observed on both Saturn and Jupiter are compatible with an internally cooled system. These findings are consistent with the numerical models of general circulation in the Jovian atmosphere constructed by Williams (1979), but the experimental demonstration of the stability of the baroclinic eddies over a wide range of conditions (Hide and Mason, 1970; Read and Hide, 1983) is considered more significant. Future investigations will focus on the relative isolation of the major eddies and on the transient smaller eddies which accompany them.
