The mechanics and gravitational interactions of tachyons are investigated theoretically using a variational-principle reformulation. A number of specific problems and implications are examined, and it is found that tachyons which, from a dynamical and energetical point of view, are attracted in a gravitational field will seem to be repelled from a kinematical point of view. The application of these findings to the interpretation of the apparently superluminal expansion observed in the cores of galaxies and quasars is discussed.
