High-resolution electron microscope images of an alloy consisting of aluminum with 14 atomic percent manganese are reported. The images reveal the localized pentagonal pseudosymmetry of the structure and show that it projects as a two-dimensional Penrose tiling. A structural model is derived which is based directly on the experimental images and on an analysis of the polyhedra occurring in the crystallographic phase Al6Mn.
