The study of the optical and ultraviolet properties of active galactic
nuclei (quasars, BL Lac objects, Seyfert and radio galaxies) is
reviewed. The 3000A hump, violently variable quasars, optical
polarization, the physics of dense gas clouds, and the intercloud medium
are discussed.
