The simulation of the spectral distribution and absolute strength of direct and indirect solar radiation was examined. It is shown that an appropriate combination of radiation sources, optical paths, filters, and selective layers enables the simulation of direct and indirect solar radiation. The simulation of directed solar radiation requires an important effort. Simulators for diffuse radiation are much easier to realize, without additional spectral adaptation. For the determination of the efficiency of solar elements the quality of spectral adaptation has to be emphasized. However, this is only possible with limitations, imposing the determination of the effective simulator radiation strength for a given spectral type of solar element. Pulsed solar simulators are not treated since it is not proven that the results are equal to those of continuously operating simulators or natural solar radiation.
