The percentage polarization and radiant intensity near the Venus surface are calculated for a model subcloud atmosphere comprising a plane layer of pure gas whose parameters are those measured in the lowest 20 km. The surface radiation field will be dictated almost entirely by the abundance of absorbing constituents in the lower atmospheric layers. Concurrent in situ photometry and polarimetry might yield reliable estimates of the water vapor and finely-dispersed aerosol content.
