The generation mechanism and characteristics of hydromagnetic (HM) waves excited in the low and high latitude magnetospheric boundary layers are examined. HM waves driven by velocity shear instability are considered in the context of theoretical models for the boundary layers, and the wave characteristics of long-period HM waves in shear plasmas are described. The relation between the HM waves excited on the magnetopause and the pulsations observed inside the magnetosphere is discussed.
