The latitudinal width of the polar cusp has been correlated with the AE(12) index and the IMF Bz. The boundaries of the cusp were determined by measurements of precipitating electrons made by the DMSP F2 and F4 satellites from February through December, 1979. Only data from active days (AE of not less than 200 nT) were selected. The cusp width varied from about 1-8 deg during the 11-month period. In general, the latitudinal width of the cusp correlates poorly with both AE (R of about 0.44) and Bz (R of about 0.59 with 30-min time delay). In spite of considerable scatter, the correlations reveal that the latitudinal width of the cusp tends to decrease with increasing magnetic activity, whether measured by AE or Bz.
