In the past two decades the exploration and scientific study of the planets has blossomed into one of the most productive and exciting fields of contemporary research. This paper briefly reviews some of the high points of that effort, points out the degree to which it has lost momentum in recent years, and suggests an agenda for future recovery of the US planetary capability.
