The hot-stratification model for auroral plasma is used to examine the dependence of the relationship betwen potential disturbances in the magnetosphere and ionosphere on the altitude of the longitudinal electrostatic acceleration region as well as the dependence of ionospheric conductivity on the flux and energy of precipitating electrons. It is shown that this latter dependence can explain the observed stratification of the field-aligned current zone with respect to the center of this zone.
