Results obtained during the first six months of SN 1987A observations indicate that this is the first SN sufficiently bright for the testing of stellar evolution theories with sufficient accuracy. Attention is given to the results obtained on the interstellar matter between the SN and the earth, including Galactic gas and gas in the LMC, where this SN is located. An analysis of the residual stellar spectrum in the UV has led to an early B-type star classification. The spatially-resolved IUE images of the residual stellar spectrum indicate the presence of two components.
