The status of the midlatitude ionosphere and the development of ionospheric disturbances have been investigated during the SUNDIAL campaign using parameters derived from both ionosonde and beacon satellite measurements. Different spatial scales are distinguished in the response of the midlatitude ionosphere to the disturbance in the atmosphere/magnetosphere system following the arrival of a high speed solar wind front. No global storm response was noted. Distinct hemispheric differences and, in small longitude sectors, stormlike depressions were found on different days in different sectors.
