The recently observed heavy-ion fusion hindrance at extreme sub-barrier
energies is reviewed. The study has been extended to lighter heavy-ion
fusion reactions. Reaction systems with positive Q-values have been
surveyed and systematics of the hindrance behavior have been developed.
The impact of the hindrance phenomenon on astrophysics is discussed.
