The objective of the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), an ESA/NASA cooperation project, is to study the sun, from its deep core to the outer corona, and the solar wind. Early measurements show that the power spectrum of the global sun surface velocity variations, outside the resonant acoustic wave peak around 5 mHz, is about an order of magnitude lower than previously computed from ground-based observations. Flows under the photosphere, in the convection zone, were measured for the first time. Three-dimensional maps show the influence of the flows in shaping the magnetic field observed in the photosphere. The sun, during its minimum of the 11-yr activity cycle, maintains an unexpected level of activity when observed in EUV light.
