Photographic surveys of the lunar surface, ground-based laser ranging and long-base radio interferometry of the moon and gravimetric and magnetic measurement are discussed. The establishment of selenocentric and areocentric coordinate systems and the corresponding network of reference points is also considered. The various types and scales of maps of the moon and Mars are introduced. The achievements of recent years in obtaining data on the moon, including earth-based investigations, studies and photographic surveys from lunar orbit and manned and unmanned expeditions on the surface of the moon are summarized.
