The nature of plasma instabilities in the solar wind at 1 AU is studied. The linear dispersion properties of proton temperature anisotropy are investigated, taking the proton distribution to consist of two components, a cooler 'core' and a hotter 'halo'. Of the four plasma instabilities studied (fire-hose, mirror, ion cyclotron, Harris), the fire-hose and the ion cyclotron instabilities are shown to be the most important modes for the parameters considered. Resonant proton effects enhance both instabilities and the cooler component can significantly reduce the threshold anisotropy of the halo-driven fire-hose.
